Frame your images with text whenever possible.
Originally, the assignment was to create a series of illustrations that would enliven the look of an existing newsletter. Included in the illustration project were departmental illustrations to serve as mainstay graphic elements and drawings to accompany topical articles as needed. From there, the assignment grew to include the design of AmtrakInk's masthead plus art direction consultation for the purpose of improving the page layout.
The direction that I provided specifically addressed how to place photos and illustrations on a page to enhance visual excitement. In essence, the layouts showed how moving some images to central locations within text areas created an explosive energy that tends to move the eye from the inside out and around the pages.
The finished examples shown on this and the next page demonstrate how well placed images can heighten interest and improve readership.

Match the masthead's type face and style in the main headlines to develop a strong identity.
Even this small sample clearly displays the esence of a newsletter's look. Without seeing the entire publication, it is possible to imagine how the rest might look. With all cap headlines, a strong masthead and photo grids, all used predominately throughout, quite enough visual distinction is displayed to make a lasting impression.
