For recognizeable caricatures, good reference is everything. Never skimp on the research time it takes to find great reference photos. Depending on what our mind's eye remembers about someone's appearance is usually a bit off the mark. In the long run, a great deal of time will be saved by going online, or to the library to get what's needed. For client's looking to conserve their budget whenever possible, supplying the illustrator with necessary reference is an efficient way to begin such a project. Carol Channing was one in a group of celebrities, all chosen for their shared experience with an eye disorder. Together, they participated in a fundraiser for which I rendered their caricatures to appear on an ad, poster and mailer. My client for this assignment was a seasoned art director with a well staffed studio. Wisely, she asked an intern to gather reference photos which served to saved a few hours of my time.
Lighten up an inflammatory message with visual humor. The humorous aspects of a caricature can be extremely soothing in a negative situation. If a magazine article truly has positive, well intended motives, its goal will be to provide helpful information rather further aggravate bad feelings. This sample is one in a series of four illustrations needed to help characterize the destructive personality types to be found in today's office environment. This one is called "The Sniper". His or her typical traits are so sneaky and two-faced that it is hard to remember such individuals without becoming enraged. Symbolic use of a generic photo depicting an unpleasant looking person whose appearance fits the bill is just too real. For such subject matter, it could easily inflame the message to such heights that productive reading would be difficult. Instead, the lighter visual presentation serves to promote understanding and a willingness to help improve this kind of unfortunate scenario.
