"A successful way I market the consulting side of my business is through speaking engagements. It gives me the opportunity to talk with my prospects and customers face-to-face to find out what it is they want. My perception of what they want may not be what they need. I think it's important not to prejudge. I also write articles for placement in trade journals and industry publications. This works well, as it gets my name out there, establishing my expertise, and I can use reprints of the articles to market my consulting services.

An important question I ask myself is "Why would anyone hire me or buy anything from me?" The answers to that question should enable me to do my job clearer and better than anyone else.

Marketing products is different than marketing services. I have a mail-order business that markets information reports and books. The important part of product marketing is to find a niche market and dominate it. You can offer money-back guarantees and discount coupons for additional products. You can incorporate testimonials in your marketing materials for a 'third-party sell' Let someone else 'blow your horn for you'. It leads to more sales.

I think unique marketing revolves around using physical devices. I know a fellow who used sand to sell vacations. He sent a small bottle of sand with his direct mail literature and got tremendous response. Physical devices such as this work because so much marketing material that's received through the mail is mediocre. Using a physical item to grabs someone's attention distinguishes you immediately. When you can accomplish this, you're at least part of the way home."
